Erma Shumakers Obituary

SHUMAKER - Erma R., 99, of Richland Township, passed away on July 17, 2005, at Memorial Medical Center. She was born on Nov. 22, 1905, in Richland Township, daughter of William G. and Alice (Blough) Hershberger. Preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul; sister, Mary Kiefer; brothers, Ira, Merle, Stanford and Charles; and a step granddaughter, Michalle (McHenry) Hershman. Survived by sons, Paul, married to the former Shirley Wingard, Ligonier, and Carl, married to the former Mitsu Emory, Sligo, Pa.; grandchildren, Denis, married to the former Kate Zimmerman, Woodstown, N.J.; Bradley, married to the former Audrey Burton, Mechanicsburg; Carol, wife of Donald Zmick, Houston, Texas; Jeffrey, married to the former Deborah Miller, Savannah, Ga.; Joel, married to the former Stacy Mickle, Windber; April, wife of James Pratt, Amhearst, Ohio; and Jeremy, Sligo, Pa.; and a step granddaughter, Chris, wife of Leo Glenn, Slippery Rock; 17 great-grandchildren and one step great-grandson; daughters-in-law, Irene Luther, New Florence, and Betty McCall, Sandusky, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews. Erma was a 1923 graduate of Richland High School. She was looking forward to attending the Richland All Class Reunion this week. Erma was an active lifelong member of Bethany United Methodist Church, Geistown. Her ministries included choir member, pianist, Sunday school teacher, financial secretary and trustee. Erma was an avid quilter and encouraged many others in the craft. She was a loving mother and grandmother. Erma cared for her extended family on numerous occasions and was employed as a caregiver to others for a number of years. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on both Tuesday and Wednesday at the Harris Funeral Home, 500 Cherry Lane, Richland, and one hour prior to service at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Bethany United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jeffrey Vanderhoff officiating. Interment will be at Richland Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Bethany United Methodist Church, 112 Leventry Road, Johnstown, Pa. 15904, in memory of Erma.
